Graduates are trained to work as a support officer in residential aged care and home care sites. This is the second level entry qualification for Certificate III graduates or for those with industry experience.
There is an acute shortage of health and aged care professionals. By 2025 there will be a shortage of more than 100,000 direct-care workers, and the Department of Health and Ageing estimates that a 300% increase in the number of staff would be required just to keep up with existing demand alone.
According to “Job Access Data” on the Australian Government Department of Employment “Job Outlook”, there will be more than 50,000 new jobs over the five years up to November 2019, and the trend is expected to grow. There are currently 141,000 carers in the sector as of November 2014. Close to 50% have a Certificate III/IV in Aged Care, while the bulk is working on a flexible permanent casual basis earning between $25 – $55/hour.

There are no formal entry requirements or prerequisites for this course. However, it is preferred that applicants have completed year 12 or equivalent and present proof of English proficiency in the form of current IELTS academic test result (not more than two years old) if English is not their first language. An IELTS score of 5.5 overall with no score below 5.5 in any skill area is required. Students must undergo a police check for a criminal background in order to work in this field, and may have to undertake additional manual handling training before commencing Vocational Placement.
We use “Blended” approach with both online and in class learning sessions. The mode of delivery is designed to give students greater control over their studies. This allows students to create a study schedule that fits with other commitments
The Academy provides all the reading and assessment material including workplace templates,
Anatomical Models, Charts, Diagrams, access to the Academy’s labs and hospital teaching facilities. The Academy also provides a Vocational Placement Service
The course is delivered online and at the Academy’s Parramatta Campus, and at the Academy’s teaching hospital facilities and at work sites throughout Sydney
Assessment methods for this course include a combination of written questions, projects, case studies, observation and a skills journal, practical observations, video assessments, third party evidence and portfolio of evidence.
The assessment is designed to ensure the student is “competent” that is they can apply the knowledge and skills they have learned. The assessment focuses on the student’s ability to perform the tasks in a timely professional and competent manner at all times. The assessment does not rely on traditional tests, rather, it’s an evaluation as to the ability to complete set tasks exhibiting a high degree of skill and knowledge.
Full time 24 weeks minimum, part time 48 weeks maximum plus 100 hours minimum of Vocational Placement.
You will need to have access to a computer with Internet access with a reliable speed of at least 5mbps, installed with MS Word, Adobe Acrobat Reader, and Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox.
Course Credit (RPL)
Students may be eligible for course credit as a result of previous study, prior experience, or recognition of a competency currently held. Course credit can also be provided through national recognition, credit transfer, or recognition of prior learning. Upon application, students must present statements of attainments, documented qualifications, references, or other materials in order to be granted course credit. The granting of course credit allows a student to be exempt from particular course units.
